Mehboob Khan’s Andaz is enshrined in posterity’s hall of fame as one of the most memorable films ever made in the history of Indian cinema. It marked the stepping into a new era, the era of tomorrow which comes at periodic intervals when one generation withers and the next begins to replace it. Mehboob Khan may or may not have consciously realized or perceived it then but the fact is that he had, in casting Nargis along with Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, achieved the casting coup of all time. There were many advantages to this move. Firstly, known stars roped in higher amounts from the distributors; secondly, known stars knew instinctively what their director wanted, and could deliver the goods in front of the camera with a minimum of retakes. Valuable time was invariably saved during the shooting so was valuable money and valuable raw film too!
